User authentication plus assurance of data integrity. Within the context of IPSec authentication means packet authentication and assures the recipient of an IP packet not only that the sender is who he or she claims to be but also that the data has not been modified in any way during transmission. Within the general context of gaining access to networks and resources authentication assures the identity of the user without assuring data integrity.
