VPI Virtual Private Internet
A creation of TradeWave Corporation which sets up a private network running over the Internet by incorporating a security system that recognizes only a given company's offices and personnel as being on the network. VPI's can be extended to selected customers and suppliers. A VPI is less expensive to set up and operate than a private wide area network (WAN) or, for EDI, a value added network (VAN), but does not provide the audit trail and management information provided by a WAN or VAN. (See WAN, VAN, and EDI in the hard copy dictionary.)
