PKI Public Key Infrastructure

A set of independent services to be developed by competing organizations that will support the use of Public Key in information security applications as well as in electronic commerce. The PKI will determine the policies for issuance of digital certificates, will issue and revoke certificates, and will save the information needed to subsequently validate the certificates. It will include certificate authorities organized both in hierarchies and in peer-to-peer networks. (See Public Key Cryptography, digital certificates, and certificate authority in the hard copy dictionary.)
